The Rolling Home
July 2002

The Rolling Home isn't rolling this month either.  We are now into our third month of workamping and are having a great time.  Most of the folks who come here are just absolutely wonderful, but the following pictures are of the one group or couple that seems to show up each weekend.  They are loud and seem to think that rules don't apply to them.  Let's hope these folks never upgrade from their tent and get a  big rig.   I would hate to see a WalMart parking lot after they left!

Our big adventure in July was attending the Oshkosh Fly In.  Each July, about 12,000 airplanes fly in to the Oshkosh airport for this big get together.  There are seminars, air shows, famous aviators (Chuck Yeager and Dick Ratann (sp?) ) were there this year.  Often the Concorde flys in.  One can take airplane rides. When the Concorde is there, it costs $700 to fly from Oshkosh to Canada and back. It is a really quick ride though!  For a mear $350 you can book a flight on a B-17 Flying Fortress.  We attended the airshow on Wednesday and the B-17 flight was booked through Monday when we got there.  We did get to go up in an American Standard Bi-Plane.  What a hoot.  The following pictures show what the well dressed aviator/aviatoress should look like and some shots from the plane as we circled over Lake Winnebago and Oshkosh.  The shots over the airfield show you just how many aircraft are there.

This picture is our favorite from the Bi-Plane flight.      We were high over Oshkosh when we took it.

Sitting in an open cockpit, with that big radial engine roaring just a few feet in front of you and the wind blowing you around (along with the prop wash) is just an unforgetable experience.    One of the neat things that happened just before this ride, was that our daughter called from Florida.  We had to tell her that we would call back because we were getting ready to get in a biplane and go for a ride.   She laughed and said " How cool, I call my parents and they are going flying in an old bi-plane. I just never know what to expect when I call you guys!"  The last time she called and we were in an unusual place, we were walking down the street in Langtry, TX thinking about Judge Roy Bean!

The rest of the day was spent looking at airplanes, airplane kits, and watching the airshow that the Fly In has ever single day.

We certainly enjoyed the Fly In.  It is on our agenda for a return visit someday!

We decided that we needed to exercise the motorhome since it had been sitting for a couple of months, so one day we drove down to Appleton and put about 40 miles on it. Everything seemed to work!   We did have  repair to make this month.  One of our AC units went out.  I opened up the control panel and had Libby try to start the unit.  I saw the starting relay arc, so we ordered a new relay and starting capacitor from Appleton Camping Center.  It came in about a week later and I installed it. Voila, $18 and the AC unit was working again. Good thing, because it has been hot and humid here all month!

Next month, wrapping up workamping. We leave on 9/4.
